The BioInnovation Institute & Science Prize for Innovation is accepting applications.
The prize aims to recognize scientists with outstanding research, an affinity for considering the application of their research, with evidence that they are involved in interdisciplinary work. Applicants write a 1,000 word essay. This prize is given by the editors of Science to acknowledge “bold researchers who are asking fundamental questions at the intersection of the life sciences and entrepreneurship.”
Previous Winners from BC:
- The 2023 Grand Prize Winner was UBC alumni, Jordan Squair. who received his undergraduate, master’s, and PhD degrees (as part of the MD/PhD program) at the University of British Columbia. Read Jordan’s winning essay here!
- One of the 2023 finalists, Samuel Bakhoum, is also a BC-trained researcher, receiving his undergraduate degrees from Simon Fraser University. Read more more about the past winners from 2022 and 2023.
Eligibility:
- Must have finished Ph.D.-level education within the last 10 years
- Must hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or combination of these degrees at the time of entry.
- If the applicant has more than one advanced degree, the 10 years are counted from the date that all degrees were completed in the case of uninterrupted training, such as a dual degree M.D.-Ph.D. program.

- $25,000 USD
- Travel and accommodation for the awards ceremony, if applicable
- 5-year digital subscription to Science
- The essay published in Science, both in print and online
