Academy of Translational Medicine – Entrepreneurship micro-course #2

This micro-course is the second in a series of entrepreneurship micro-courses developed and delivered as a strategic cross-faculty initiative by the Faculty of Medicine with support from Sauder School of Business. A total of five micro-courses covering fundamental topics of entrepreneurship in health will run February-June 2022 and can be taken individually or be bundled. The initial set of courses will focus on the “identification of need” phase.

Second micro-course topic: Understanding the Competitive Landscape.

In this module, you’ll learn to map current and future competitors and potential partners to understand the space that you want to play in. The ability to understand your market is fundamental to creating a successful company, and is a critical step in the successful approach to raising funds for a new company.  You’ll find these skills can also improve the odds of success for translational research grant applications.

Format and level of commitment: 5-hour minimum (optional extra material):

  • 1-hour preparation (online, asynchronous, self-paced) – materials will be released online on March 15th
    • You will view several short videos and then answer a few questions and submit these ahead of the workshop.
  • 3-hour workshop (in person, live, synchronous – no online option available) – March 28th
    • The workshop is in-person and activity-based, with very little lecturing.
  • 1-hour practical application of learning to each learner’s area of translational interest (online, asynchronous, self-paced) – materials will be available online after March 28th
    • A short written submission will complete the course module, and you will be given feedback from the instructors, to support your personal interests and ambitions.

Audience: Post-docs, PhDs and PIs interested in practical tools to support translation from lab invention to patient impact. There is no charge to participants.

Purpose:

  1. to provide interested medical researchers with a basic understanding of identification of a medical need and how to map out the value and problems of a new invention.
  2. to get feedback from the participants on the formats and content of the new entrepreneurship workshop series. Help shape the ATMs education and training program for you and your peers.

The mini-platform will serve to kickstart the larger vision of building a modern and nimble translational medicine education platform within the Faculty of Medicine.
