Pathways to impact: translating innovation and venture-building
Innovation is a process by which research yields not just new knowledge, but translates into impactful outcomes for society in the form of products, services, companies, policies/practices, and cultural shifts. Getting from a really promising research finding to an innovation that benefits society, however, is anything but linear. Whether you envision delivering your impact via:
- Implement policies, practice or public debate
- Build partnerships with external stakeholders
- Commercialize a research discovery
- Build or support a start-up venture
…there is support within UBC for all of these activities!
In this session, we’re going to help build a conceptual scaffold on which you can mentally hang each of the innovation / venture-building supports available to you. The aim of this workshop is to define the community that exists to support

The Faculty of Medicine Translational Medicine Rounds (FoM TM Rounds) are hosted for junior faculty members conducting translational research as well as their colleagues. The rounds serve to form the foundation of the new ATM community and provide a forum where early-career interdisciplinary researchers:
- present ongoing projects,
- get feedback from the local community,
- learn about ongoing research, and
- connect with academic and clinical faculty in other disciplines.
