November 7th FoM TM Rounds

Faculty of Medicine Translational Medicine Research Rounds

Speakers: Anna Lehman, Adrienne Elbert, Stuart Turvey

Moderator: Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink

Title and Talk summary:

Bridging the gap between academic research and their clinical applications is a critical step to addressing contemporary health issues, but a complex task. Together, Dr. Turvey and Dr. Lehman co-lead the Rare Disease Discovery Hub at BC Children’s Hospital, which aims to identify causes of rare and ultra-rare diseases, and gain insight into how the diseases work and how to target therapies. The Hub is an innovative translational research program with a multi-disciplinary approach to improving outcomes for children in B.C. and their families.

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand how the Rare Disease Discovery Hub apply a multi-disciplinary approach to generate insights into rare disease mechanisms and develop new treatments.
  2. A model to successfully connect clinicians scientists to basic scientists to address rare diseases more effectively.

Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink

Moderator:

Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink, PhD

Assistant Professor, Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar

Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Dr. Ramon Klein Geltink joined the department of Pathology and Laboratory medicine and BCCHRI in July 2019 to start a research program in immunometabolism. His research program at UBC/BCCHRI aims to characterize nutrient-sensing pathways in immune cells. He uses biochemical and metabolomic techniques to understand what fuel is needed for immune cell function, and how immune cells sense the fuel that is available in their environment. By closely collaborating with Clinicians and Clinician scientists at BCCHR he is aiming to apply the findings to design better treatments for children with immune related diseases.

Dr. Anna Lehman

Speaker:

Dr. Anna Lehman, MD, FRCPC, MA

Associate Professor, Department of Medical Genetics, University of British Columbia

Dr. Anna Lehman is Medical Director of the Adult Metabolic Diseases Clinic at Vancouver General Hospital and Associate Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia. Her research program has focused on identifying genetic causes for rare diseases and on improving the diagnostic process for people with genetic disorders

Dr. Adrienne Elbert

Speaker:

Adrienne Elbert, MD, PhD

Resident

Adrienne Elbert is a final year resident in Medical Genetics and Genomics. She also has a PhD in Biochemistry from Western University, where she completed the MD/PhD program. Her clinical interests include chromatin-related neurodevelopmental disorders, metabolic disease, and psychiatric presentation of Mendelian disorders. She has research experience in neuronal migration and epigenetics.

Dr. Stuart Turvey

Speaker:

Dr. Stuart Turvey, MBBS, DPHIL, FRCPC

Professor of Pediatrics, University of British Columbia

Dr. Stuart Turvey is a Professor of Pediatrics at The University of British Columbia where he holds both the Canada Research Chair in Pediatric Precision Health and the Aubrey J. Tingle Professorship in Pediatric Immunology. He is a clinician-scientist and Pediatric Immunologist based at BC Children’s Hospital. Dr. Turvey’s research program is focused on determining the early-life origins of asthma and allergic disease, as well as harnessing the power of genomics to diagnose, treat and prevent pediatric immune disorders. His ability to transition from the clinic to the lab allows Dr. Turvey to take a precision health approach that is sensitive to the developmental course of the child. His work determines and responds to the underlying cellular, molecular and genetic abnormalities responsible for disease.

Dr. Turvey and his team generate new knowledge to define the mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and, ultimately, to identify new strategies to treat and even prevent these burdensome and often life-threatening conditions.
