Dr. Anna Blakney named in the 35 Innovators Under 35 List by MIT Technology Review

Dr. Blakney continues to be recognized for excellence, and has recently been named one of MIT Technology Review’s 2023 35 Innovators Under 35. Out of 500 nominees. Dr. Blakney was one of only 35 recognized, with her exceptional research regarding mRNA vaccines falling under the list’s Biotechnology category.

The UBC Collaborative Research Mobility Awards (UBC CRMA)

The UBC Collaborative Research Mobility Awards (UBC CRMA) are an excellent way for researchers at UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan to work in collaboration. The funding is designed to:

  • initiate new, or strengthen existing research collaborations;
  • enable travel to access unique infrastructure/core facilities at each location or to hold research meetings;
  • support travel, per diems, and accommodations for UBC researchers

The application is a 600 word proposal that includes:

  • identification of researchers involved at UBCV and UBCO, with a brief description of their excellence in the research area(s);
  • a description of the purpose for the travel;
  • anticipated outcomes of the award (e.g., starting or strengthening a collaboration, accessing infrastructure or core facilities available at the other campus, initiating a collaborative grant proposal, or undertaking a component of a research study); and
  • a budget that includes a brief justification and the anticipated start and end date.

Faculty members from all disciplines are eligible to apply if they are  eligible to hold research grants.

Upcoming Deadline: 3 November 2023

Frequency: Competitions held twice per year

Limits:

  • $5,000 maximum per proposal
    • Funding cannot be spent on direct research costs or for pre-existing meetings
  • Maximum of one award per one-year funding cycle

Requirement of successful applicants: Brief online report on the activities undertaken, no later than one month after the project’s end date

3 ATM Researchers Amongst Faculty to Receive Federal and Provincial Funding

Please join us in congratulating members of the ATM Community who are amongst the 31 UBC Faculty of Medicine researchers awarded more than $7 million in funding through federal and provincial funding.

The ATM is pleased that such initiatives are being supported. The UBC Faculty of Medicine describing that the funding awarded “will support key research infrastructure, advance innovation and talent development, and accelerate research tackling some of the most pressing health challenges facing British Columbians, Canadians and the world.” Funding for these projects comes from the Canada Foundation of Innovation (CFI), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and the BC Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF). Nominations Open: 2024 Clinical Trials BC Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2024 Clinical Trials BC Awards.

With clinical trials being an integral aspect of the translational medicine framework, these awards are an opportunity to highlight the importance of exceptional work within the clinical trial process. The ATM encourages those within its community to consider if they have suitable nominations to submit for these prestigious awards.

These awards are meant to recognize excellence within the BC clinical trials ecosystem, both on an individual level and and organizational level. Recipients of the award provide meaningful contributions to clinical trials within the province though leadership, advocacy, and service to the field of clinical trials and associated health outcomes. There are two awards described below.

1. Leadership & Advocacy Award

This award honours outstanding leaders and advocates for clinical trials at the provincial and/or national level. Recipients are leaders who educate, mentor, advocate or spearhead projects, programs and strategies that benefit the clinical trials community.

2. Service & Support Award

This award recognizes the community-based, volunteer commitment of an individual, organization, company or agency to improve the clinical trials community.

  • Killam Accelerator Research Fellowships
    • Supports exceptional early career researchers across all disciplines who have the potential for significant impact in their field of scholarship.

    • Referee letters must be received by ORPA by the full nomination deadline.
  • Killam Faculty Research Fellowships
    • Assisting promising faculty members who wish to devote full time to research and study in their field during a recognized study leave.
  • President’s Award for Public Education through Media
    • For a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in sharing research expertise via the news media (print, broadcast, and online interviews and commentary).
  • Killam Faculty Research Prizes
    • Up to ten prizes of $5,000 each will be awarded to full-time tenure-stream faculty in recognition of outstanding research and scholarly contributions.
  • Jacob Biely Faculty Research Prize
    • The Jacob Biely Faculty Research Prize was established in 1969 and is regarded as UBC’s premier award for research across all disciplines.
  • Charles A. McDowell Award
    • An award for an outstanding early career faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in pure or applied scientific research.

Accepting Applications: BioInnovation Institute & Science Prize for Innovation

The BioInnovation Institute & Science Prize for Innovation is accepting applications.

The prize aims to recognize scientists with outstanding research, an affinity for considering the application of their research, with evidence that they are involved in interdisciplinary work. Applicants write a 1,000 word essay. This prize is given by the editors of Science to acknowledge “bold researchers who are asking fundamental questions at the intersection of the life sciences and entrepreneurship.”

Eligibility:

  • Must have finished Ph.D.-level education within the last 10 years
  • Must hold an M.D., Ph.D., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or combination of these degrees at the time of entry.
  • If the applicant has more than one advanced degree, the 10 years are counted from the date that all degrees were completed in the case of uninterrupted training, such as a dual degree M.D.-Ph.D. program.

Call for Abstracts: Vancouver Diabetes Research Day 2023

There is a call for abstracts for the 10th annual Vancouver Diabetes Research Day, hosted by BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute

Vancouver Diabetes Research Day 2023 will celebrate the accomplishments of our colleagues and the positive impact of their research on people and families living with and at risk for diabetes. The meeting is focused on all aspects of diabetes research – from beta cells to bicycles.

This exciting annual scientific day enables diabetes researchers from across British Columbia to connect, collaborate, and present their research. Graduate trainees are invited to deliver an oral presentation or present a scientific poster highlighting their research project.

VDRD is an internal academic research day and is not open to the public.

adMare Academy Launches Cohort II of the BioInnovation Scientist (BIS) Program for Fall 2023

Earlier in 2023, the inaugural BIS Program (adMare BioInnovation Scientist Program: Foundations) was launched. Now, adMare BioInnovations is launching its second cohort, with adMare BioInnovation Scientist BIS Program: Foundations Cohort II. Topics include intellectual property, the high-risk/high-reward nature of the industry, and the importance of incorporating inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility principles into therapeutics development.
